One can get quite caught up in definitions of what constitutes psychoanalysis
or a psychoanalyst.  History has shown that people from diverse professions
(of course, including many social workers and counselors) practice
psychoanalytic therapy, with and without the couch, whether institute trained
or not.

When this gets re-hashed, I think the issue often becomes more a matter of
power, autonomy, institutional dynamics, and territorialism, rather than a
reasonable discussion about the pros and cons of institute training.  As we
see in many people's comments that appear to diminish the competence or
training of social workers, counselors, or MA-level psychologists--which is
not particularly constructive...
