"The official break between Adler and Freud did not end
their acrid feud. Adler had not been analyzed by Freud and
later prided himself on not having been Freud's pupil.
Freud later referred to Adler as a "Pigmy," saying, "I
made a Pigmy great." In turn, Adler countered that even
a "Pigmy" perched on the shoulders of a "great giant"
could see farther that his supporter. When Freud heard
of this statement, he chided that this might be true of
a Pigmy but not of a louse in the giant's hair."
