'The Right to be at Risk' by Joseph H. Berke.
http://human-nature.com/free-associations/risk.html

Joseph Berke is the founder and director of the Arbours Crisis
Centre, a therapeutic community in London which for three decades has
been providing a haven for mentally distressed people who would
otherwise be likely to be in mental hospitals. The approach of the
centre is psychoanalytic. In this talk he reflects on the right to
approach mental distress in the way they do there, even though it
involves some risk, risk which he argues should be balanced against
the dignity that their approach maintains in contrast to how people
are often treated in traditional mental hospitals. He describes the
work of the crisis centre and provides case studies of people who
have been guests there.

Joseph H. Berke reviews _To Redeem One Person is to Redeem the World:
The Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichman_ by Gail A. Hornstein.
http://human-nature.com/free-associations/berke.html

Frieda Fromm Reichman, a psychoanalyst, was the clinical director at
Chesnut Lodge, a private mental hospital near Washington DC where
Harold Searles also worked for many years. In this biography of Fromm
Reichman, Prof Hrnstein tells the story of of the woman, her
approach and the institution, one which led the way in treating
psychotic people with psychoanalysis. Her work with one of the
patient was the basis for the best-selling autobiographical novel, _I
Never Promised you a Rose Garden_. When she spoke about Chesnut Lodge
in a talk at the Arbours Crisis Centre she said that it was sad that
current arrangements for funding the care of the mentally ill mean
that there could not now be an institution in America along the lines
of Chesnut Lodge (now closed) or the Arbours Crisis Centre, where a
humanistic approach and psychoanalysis lie at the heart of the
treatment regime.

Joseph Berke's talk and review will appear in the quarterly journal
_Free Associations_
