I have just received the following stunning message from John Forrester:
I have the distressing task of informing you that Roy Porter died
yesterday, Sunday 3rd March 2002. He was involved in an accident near his
home in Hastings and was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
The funeral has not yet been arranged, but there will also be a Memorial
Service at a later date.
I will add that it was my privilege to teach him in Cambridge and to
follow his distinguished career with delight and awe. I had a lovely
letter from him just the other day about his new setting after taking
early retirement and his plans for world travel. He will be sorely
missed. Such a good man; he bore no ill will to others, though he
could be delightfully sardonic.
Best, Bob Young
