                                          UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
                                         EXETER
                                          POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

                                          FOUR POSTDOCTORAL FELOWSHIPS
Exeter Genomics Research Institute (EGRI) The University
                                          of Exeter has received major
funding from the ESRC to establish a Research Group for the study of
                                          the implications of genomics. The
Exeter Genomics Research Institute (EGRI) will be directed by
                                          Professor John Dupre (Philosophy
of Science), and Associate Directors, Professors Barry Barnes
                                          (Sociology) and Steve Hughes
(Biology). EGRI associates also include Exeter University staff from
                                          a wide variety of related
disciplines. The EGRI invites application for four postdoctoral fellowships
that will play major roles in
carrying out its research mission. We wish to make appointments, with
effect from 1 October 2002 for
five years in the first instance, in the following specific areas.

                                          Genosemantics Centre (Ref. 8050).
The appointee will work with Professor Barnes and Professor
Dupre on either of two proposed
projects. The first will address the role of genomics as a source of
                                          status markers and the possible
consequences of the proliferation of genomically based statuses.
                                          The second will investigate the
changes in meanings of genomic terminology as this
                                          disseminates from domains of
bioscientific expertise into legal, and eventually public domains.
                                          Eventual concerns will be the
understandings of concepts such as responsibility and human
                                          dignity.

Genopragmatics Centre (Ref. 8051). The appointee will work in
collaboration with
                                          colleagues from the School of
Law, under the overall Centre direction of Professor Dupre on an
                                          international and comparative
survey of the implications of Genomic Technology for Intellectual
                                          Property Law. This will involve
both food-chain related patents of plants and animals, and attempts
to patent human genes and genomes.

Genopraxis Centre - two posts. The first appointee (Ref. 8052) will
work with the team of Professors Andrew Hattersley (Molecular Medicine)
and John
                                          Campbell (Primary Care) in the
newly established Peninsula Medical School on the impact of
                                          genetic technology on patient
diagnosis and management. The second appointee (Ref. 8053) will
                                          collaborate with members of the
School of Biological Sciences and linked international institutions
on the impact of genomics based
tools on local agricultural practices. A special focus will be on the
                                          production of rice in the
developing world.

Appointments are not restricted as to discipline. Likely
                                          expertise would be in the
sociology or philosophy of science for 8050; sociology of law or political
                                          science for 8051; sociology or
anthropology of medicine or science for 8052/8053. Any relevant
                                          background will be considered,
including practitioners in bioscience, medicine, law, etc., who plan
                                          to develop their social science
expertise.

Applicants will also have a PhD in a relevant field.
Enquiries may be directed to John
Dupre ([log in to unmask]) , Barry Barnes
                                          ([log in to unmask]) or
Steve Hughes ([log in to unmask]). Salary will be in the range
                                          £20,470 p.a. to £24,435 p.a.
