Developments in Wireless Communication
Daniel Frieling, MD

Using wireless technology, Pediatric Software provides technology to the Children's Hospital of the Greenville Hospital System to provide a complete medical record system housed in a mobile van that is used in making house calls. Capable of storing tens of thousands of patient files, wireless portable handheld devices (Windows CE HP/C units, Vadem Clio) are being used to view and update information live, from handheld devices carried in the vans. A server is housed in the van, making files and other record keeping software available to practitioners within a wide roaming range. Backup files are created and updated by connecting the mobile server to the hospital's wired network. Security: Electronic medical records have much greater security than paper files. A cleaning crew working at night in an office has full access to anyone's medical record placed in chart-racks. The wireless communications from the handheld devices to the server utilizes 40-bit encryption to prevent "air-wave stealing" of data. If necessary, 128-bit encryption can be added. The CompuKID medical record software has multiple levels of password protection.
