ATSP OnLine: Telemedicine TeleJournal
Jim Hutchinson, M.D.
Chairman, Georgia Telemedicine Association

Georgia offered the first statewide telemedical program in the United
States. Unfortunately it is a T-1 point to point system with low,
although growing, utilization. Recognizing this as only a small portion of
evolving Telemedical/Telehealth applications, the then director of the Georgia
Hospital Association's Educational TELNET and myself suggested a format
for expanded discussion in a time/cost effective manner. Via the
Association's telephone bridge, many helpful volunteer TM/TH experts, and
by Internet distribution announcing the sessions, we have offered to an
international audience a varied topic agenda since early 1996. Registration
is by email and the only cost to attendees is that of the connecting phone call.
Also there are no written materials or handouts from the program, but by
exchange of email addresses amongst presenters and interested
participants multiple benefits have been reported to us. Currently we are
expanding access and distribution of the effort by agreement with the
Association of Telehealth Service Providers (ATSP) to post the sessions on their web
site. Applying streaming technology, they may then be utilized globally
and without time zone restrictions by interested participants albeit minus
the live Q&A available to those on the conference call.

J.R.B. (Jim) Hutchinson, M.D. Dr.Hutchinson practiced family
medicine in a small Virginia coal mining town, the United States Air
Force and after residency training, in group and solo Ear Nose and
Throat practices before devoting his efforts to the evolving area of
Telemedicine/Telehealth. To hear Jim's Telenet programs go to

Developments in Wireless Communication
Daniel Frieling <[log in to unmask]>

Using wireless technology, Pediatric Software provides technology to
the Children's Hospital of the Greenville Hospital System to provide a
complete medical record system housed in a mobile van that is used
in making house calls. Capable of storing tens of thousdands of patient files,
wireless portable handheld devices (Windows CE HP/C units, Vadem Clio)
are being used to view and update information live, from handheld devices
carried in the vans. A server is housed in the
van, making files and other record keeping software available to
practitioners within a wide roaming range. Backup files are created
and updated by connecting the mobile server to the hospital's wired
network.

Security:
Electronic medical records have much greater security than paper files. A
cleaning crew working at night in an office has full access to anyone's
medical record placed in chart-racks. The wireless communications from the
handheld devices to the server utilizes 40 bit encryption to prevent
"air-wave stealing" of data. If necessary, 128 bit encryption can be added.
The CompuKID medical record software has multiple levels of password
protection.
