The reason is that the body is compensating by diverting the accumulated
T4 to reverse T3 and for some the T3 levels appear to be low despite a
high T4. For some reasons, the person may still feel hypothyroid despite
the high T4. This pathway is a compensatory mechanism and is seen
clearly in hyperthyroids and those with severe non-thyroidal illness.
Otherwise, the body would consume itself, diverting all energy into
production of heat instead of work.
