One or 2, very poorly done "studies" suggested thyroid replacement lead to
bone loss. They took the bone density of women taking thyroid, and compared
it to women not taking thyroid, without any adequate controls for other
factors.

While actually being Hyperthyroid can make you lose bone density, moderate
thyroid replacement failed to show bone loss in later studies. Some of the
original women who had shown bone loss had been Hyperthyroid, had their
thyroid glands burned out, and hence needed replacement.

Here are references for the later studies that failed to demonstrate bone
loss with thyroid replacement. As a rule, docs have never heard of these
better studies, and are totally familiar with the original poorly done study.

Florkorski et al: Bone Mineral density in patients receiving suppressive
doses of thyroxine...: N Z Med j. Oct 27,1993; 106(966): 443-4.

Marcocci C. et al. Carefully monitored levothyroxine suppressive therapy is
not associated with bone loss in premenopausal women.
J Clin endocrinol metab 1994 Apr; 78 (4) 818-23

Ross D. Bone Density is not reduced during the short term administration of
levothyroxine to post menopausal women with subclinical hypothyroidism: a
randomized, prospective study.
Oct 1993 The American J. of Med. vol. 95; 385-6

Schneider DL et al. Thyroid Hormone use and bone density in elderly women.
The effect of estrogen; JAMA 1994 Apr 27; 271 (16): 1245-9 >>>

You may want to arm yourself with copies of the above studies so that no one
tries to take you off thyroid to "protect" your bones.

I find that Natural Progesterone cream is better and safer than the
prescription drugs used in the USA for osteoporosis.
