Your symptoms sound exactly like mine with nutcracker esophagus. It's
important to get this evaluated to determine if a more serious condition is
present which would need to be treated.

Esophageal motility problems are discerned by a X-Ray barium swallow study
which examines how you swallow. It's an easy test to take. Ask your
doctor about having the barium swallow.

If you swallow funny then there is an esophageal manometry in which one
swallows a series of small tranducers attached serially on a thin lead.
Pressure is measured from the lower end to the upper end of the esophagus.
In this way if you are having spasms, the location of that spasm is mapped
out which determines which problem you have.

I have a benign condition called nutcracker esophagus in which powerful
spasms occur in the mid lower third of the esophagus The diagnostics and
necessary to ruleout more dangerous conditions. I'm indeed grateful that my
malady is benign and sometimes only a nuisance.
