Hi, Skipper and Edward,
Terms: Auditory Processing Disorder (neurological difficulty processing oral speech in a variety of situations)
There has been anecdotal evidence, supplied by members of this list, and the APD listservs, of individuals with APD who have noticed a definite worsening of their symptoms when their thyroid is out of wack. I am certainly one of them. However, at this time, there is no concrete research that I'm aware of that links thyroid function as a cause for APD. Ear infections, genetics, traumatic brain injury, strokes, possibly jaundice-these have been named. On a personal basis, I think thyroid dysfunction can exacerbate APD; I am doing much better on Armour now, but my APD remains, so mine was not caused by Hashis.
It is very good advice that if a person is suspected of having APD, see if there are symptoms of other disorders as well that may point to an underlying or coexisting disorder.
Laurie
