<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> I have recently (3/12 ago) been diagnosed with Coeliac disease after life long GI symptoms. (I am told that as an infant I was addmitted to hospital with a life threatening mal- absorption syndrome after being weaned off the breast.I was sent home to die, with the final bit of advice to resume the diet on which I was last well. A neighbourhood collection of breast milk from breastfeeding mothers saved the day and thereby ensured my survival.) As with other subscribers to the list, I made a poor selection of available genetic material, collecting the genes responsible for a catalogue of auto-immune problems. I have had IDDM for 19 yrs, hypothyroidism for a year or so and courtesy of undiagnosed CD, small stature, severe osteoporosis and a sprinkling of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. My diabetes was moderately well controlled prior to changing to a gluten free diet, with a relatively stable treatment and dietary regime. I was told that, once my diet changed, I would begin to feel better and probably achieve improved control. However,I find that my sugars are all over the place, with sugars in the 20's, followed by hypos, while trying to second guess my confused body. I have no doubt that having to change to foods with higher glycaemic indeces and improved/more rapid absorption are the culprits, but I am struggling to find solutions. I expect, as with most things diabetic, it will be a personal and lonely journey of trial & error and discovery, but I would be grateful for some advice or tips if there are any out there. * Visit the Celiac Web Page, http://www.enabling.org/ia/celiac/index.html *
