The economic system that went with the Industrial
Revolution, capitalism, continued the concentration
of wealth into the hands of the owners of both
commercial and industrial enterprises. This tendency
grew gradually in the nineteenth century and
accelerated in the twentieth century.
The owners of these enterprises wanted to increase
their profits as much as they could and paid their
workers only enough to keep them alive in miserable
circumstances.
Their living conditions often did not give them
access to adequate nutrition and even the most basic
hygiene.
Their working shifts weakened them to the point
of sickness.
They did not have any access to education. And
if they had it, the physical demands of their working
hours would not let them concentrate on their studies.
Even women and children in the less privileged classes
had to work to the point of physical exhaustion
to maintain their families in these outrageously
miserable conditions.
Because of these problems, workers in industrial
countries tried to defend their interests by
establishing unions, which gradually consolidated
and organized large demonstrations starting in 1905.
These unions could not be established in economic
sectors where the workers' living conditions were
at their worst, and they had to limit their political
action in areas where industrialization was most
heavily concentrated.
In England and Germany these unions had some 4,000,000
workers, a much higher amount than in France, where
only about 1,000,000 were able to organize themselves
into unions.
