Italian "occhiali" is originally an adjective derived from "occhio" and
meaning "of the eyes" or "connected with the eyes". It was only used in
connection with the nouns "vetro" ("glass") and "canna" ("barrel"): "vetro
occhiale" meant eyeglasses and "canna occhiale" (whence "cannocchiale")
meant "telescope". Meaning "eyeglasses", the adjective was soon used,
usually plural, as a noun with ellipsis of "vetro".

I hope this helps.
