I think the best starter would be: Andrew Large: The International Language
Movement. I think it was published in 1984 in the UK.
I tried without success to access
http://infoweb.magi.com/~mfettes/studies.htm
that Ken wrote about.
The number of Esperantists being members of national organizations is about
30,000. You can amuse yourself in counting how high the percentage of
organized persons is as compared to the total estimated number of Esperanto
speakers.
The other languages are so small so they don't have any numbers at all.
This is a short text in Esperanto (the h stands for a circumflex accent
that is put over letters like c, s g etc. as U.S. ASCII was not designed by
Esperantists.
Personally I prefer Interlingua, published by the International Auxiliary
Language Association. This is a little sample text in Interlingua:
Io habita
in Svedia, e io ha apprendite interlingua. Plure alumnos in le scholas
svedese se interessa in interlingua.
Personalmente io prefere interlingua, benque io etiam pote usar esperanto.
