Hi Bro Malik,

Thanks for the feedback. The world is a global village. As things loosens up a little, I will drag Juldeh to an interview. (Laughs!)

Bro Nyang:

Not much with Rodney, but I agree with your submission, which is Ginny's submission as well. Knowing that you are fluent in pular, I can see where yours is coming from. Also, I thought about it last night, and since hal-pular is that deep, I figured it could as well mean "married to a white", though context wise, it is far from it. It comes back to your summary of it all.

Thanks for your input ladies & gents. I had a great time threading on Mariama.

Yorro, a big 'Jarama' from Juldeh, am just getting back from a small gig he had in East London. He laughed when I told him of your admiration. He is really popularising your culture, next stop 2moro is some studio collab with some Scotish Violinists, then next week he is off to Japan for touring...

In “Mariama,” Juldeh and Justin spoke about the qualities of a woman called Mariama; that she is of a very kind nature, ethical, and in good societal standing. “Deboh Tubako” literally meaning “white woman” nature of Mariama is a local proverb talking about her beauty, light skinned nature, white teeth’s smile, and healthy nature. Further, Juldeh spoke about her quietness and well mannered nature attested by previous musicians (Jalibeh Foday).

The combination of the music and lyrical words is in one about love. In short, it is a great tribute to women. Mariama can be any woman fitting the descriptions of Juldeh.

I never met Juldeh in real life but I hope to some day in life. Juldeh plays the Fulani fiddle very tactfully. Juldeh is certainly culturally brought up and inherited the fiddle from his parents, which is common in many African societies. One thing certain about the fiddle is its melodious tone, and the ability to change melody gears sharply at any time of the performance. Personally, I don’t how old is the instrument, but I have seen from childhood and I know it existed for the longest.
Fortunately, Juldeh is one of those fiddle superstars in my best observation. Jamo Jawel from Fawun used to be aired on radio Gambia. He was another one of the many gifted with the power of using fiddles. He died about a year ago (May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen). You can listen to Jamo on www.onegambia.com.

Importance of Music

Music especially traditional means to a lot to the society it is addressed to. The spoken words as well as the instruments’ sound means a lot. Music is very healthy. Despite certain religious limitations on it, music is almost used by everyone. It deeply penetrates peoples’ hearts and minds, deep down to where only music lyrics can get. Certainly music exists for a reason; one that is known to the music lovers. It is not only enough of knowing the sound of the instruments and words, but also what is being expressed. Musicians are great educators, and very peaceful people in nature. For the longest in human history, music has kept many going.

I am greatly inspired by Mariama. I hope “Mariama” inspires you all.

Kind Regards,
yj
