I understand your general impression Yero. The keywords are:"The point is if that was the agreement during their struggle for independence, I think they should honor it."
Indeed when President Senghor spoke while he was president, he always spoke in the capacity of leader of all Senegal. Therefore, how can a leader of all Senegal promise Senegal's eventual disintegration??????? Plus, all leaders' liabilities are limited to their terms in office. From what I know about Senghor, if he had made such a promise (it could very well be misunderstood by the then "leaders" of Cassamance. You know Senghor is a poet don't you?), Senghor would have kept his promise while he was President and had the ability to fulfil his promises.
Just think about it..... If Senghor were to make such a promise, why would Kolda, TambaCounda, St Louis and Rufisque not seek their own independences????????? Was it because they didn't have an MFDK, MFDT, MFDS, and MFDR????????????? Think about it.
While I'm here Yero, the reason I was unhappy on Wednesday was because there was an impending resignation of Olberman from MSNBC. I finally figured it out.
Yero, I encourage you not to cede your right to Free expression and association because of Fear of not being able to visit Senegal. There is only one God/Allah as you always remind us.
Haruna.

Bro Haruna,
I will take your word for it, over Wikipedia's lack of credibility.
By the way when I say Senghor, I mean the whole of Senegal, since he was speaking under the capacity of a leader. The point is if that was the agreement during their struggle for independence, I think they should honor it.
Thanks, & I better shut up or I won't visist Senegal....(laugh).
later,
Yero.

Yero,
I encourage you to review the PROMISE proper that President Senghor made to the then "leaders" of Cassamance. Wikipedia is not a reliable source of history and interpretation thereof.
All that being said, A nation cannot rely on promises of any one President. If Senghor promised that Cassamance, once she joins the other regions to rid Senegal of colonization, and contiguous Senegal gained independence from colonial France, there would be no value for Cassamance to therefore secede from an independent and un-colonized Senegal. You see what I mean don't you? And Senghor or no Senghor, no President can make any promise the fulfilment of which may/will survive the President's mandate. This is not to say that President Senghor promised any such cacamayme. I am only sharing with you that a promise and its fulfilment are generally in the eye of the beholder. A mere analysis of such a "promise" will render it null and void at the time of issue.
Haruna.

I think Senegal should honor their promise then; 'word is bond.'

Foroya's report on the gun battle between Senegal and Cassamance makes it a necessity to take the case of the intercepted arms in Nigeria as a serious case at the UN quarters.
Just out of curiosity: Is there any reason why Senegal cannot give independence to Cassamance?
Thanks,
Yero.
