*GAMBIA * Two journalists held for reporting defections from ruling party

Reporters Without Borders condemns yesterday’s arbitrary arrests of *Musa
Sheriff*, the owner and editor of the Banjul-based tri-weekly newspaper *The
Voice*, and *Sainey Marenah*, one of his reporters, on a charge of
“publishing false information.”

They are being held in connection with a report in their paper last month
that 19 members of the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and
Construction defected to the opposition United Democratic Party.

“We call on the Gambian authorities to release these two journalists at
once and to stop persecuting media personnel,” Reporters Without Borders
said. “These latest arrests are yet further evidence of the government’s
authoritarian attitude and its attempts to silence any criticism.

the media did not last long. We urge the government to respect its
obligations to guarantee freedom of expression, as stipulated in article 19
of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Gambia
ratified in 1979.”

After being arrested at his Banjul office, Sheriff was taken to a police
station at Sanyag, 30 km outside of the city. Mareneh was arrested when he
went to visit Sheriff at the police station. The charge against them
carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of 3 million
dalasi (64,000 euros).

Deux journalistes de The Voice détenus

Reporters sans frontières condamne les arrestations arbitraires, le 13
janvier 2014, de *Musa Sheriff*, rédacteur en chef et propriétaire du
tri-hebdomadaire privé *The Voice*, et de *Sainey Marenah*, journaliste de
ce média. Ils sont inculpés pour "avoir publié de fausses informations".

En cause, un article paru dans *The Voice* en décembre 2013 faisant état de
la défection de 19 militants du parti présidentiel, l’Alliance pour la
réorientation et la construction patriotique (APRC), en faveur du principal
parti d’opposition, le Parti démocratique uni (UDP).

"Nous demandons aux autorités gambiennes de libérer immédiatement ces deux
journalistes et de mettre un terme à ses persécutions à l’encontre des
professionnels des médias. Ces nouvelles arrestations démontrent à nouveau,
si besoin était, l’attitude autoritaire du gouvernement gambien qui tente
de museler toute voix critique", a déclaré Reporters sans frontières.

l’article 19 du Pacte relatif aux droits civils et politiques que la Gambie
a ratifié en 1979", a ajouté l’organisation.

Arrêté par la police à son bureau de Banjul, Musa Sheriff a été conduit au
poste de police de Sanyag, à 30 km de là. L’auteur de l’article, Sainey
Marenah, venu lui rendre visite, a été arrêté à son tour.

Selon le chef d’accusation retenu contre eux, les journalistes risquent 15
ans d’emprisonnement et jusqu’à 3 millions de dalasis gambiens (64 000
euros) d’amende pour "diffusion de fausses nouvelles".

La Gambie occupe la 152e place sur 179 pays selon le classement 2013 de la
liberté de la presse établi par Reporters sans
