The Gambia National Commission for Unesco in collaboration with The Gambia
College on January 13 launched a Mathematics, Science and Technology Centre
at the College campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, Musa Sowe, the director of the Centre said
science and technology are fundamental pillars in the socio-economic
development of any society. “I am hopeful that youths will take advantage
of this centre and participate fully in all programmes it offers. This
centre will help to equip students with the science and technology skills
to participate in national development,” said Mr Sowe.

He thanked the government and Unesco for their “immense contributions” in
making the centre a reality.
Jenung Manneh, the principal of Gambia College said that the institution
has been faced with demands from both public and private sectors to provide
skilled manpower in the areas of technology, mathematics and basic science
education.

“We are convinced that the development of maths, science and technology are
essential tools that would form the basis to generate the human and
intellectual resources needed to deliver and strengthen basic education
services,” he said.

Sirreh Jallow, the permanent secretary DoSE said, “it is a cardinal aim of
the government to promote and sustain science and technology education in
the school system. It has the potential to stimulate and promote critical
thinking abilities as well as motivate students to embrace scientific and
technology approach in their pursuit of scientific and technological
knowledge.
