Gambians: Defend Yourselves and Resist Arbitrary Arrest by Jammeh and His Ruffians

Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh

By Karamba Touray, Florida, US

Recent reports of roaming bands of idolators flashing veneers of officialdom with uniformed personnel and regime supporting holigans descending on communities and essentially, frog marching dozens of folks in bizzare rituals for no purpose other than a deliberate and cruel attempt at humiliation, has left a lot of people seething with anger and for good reason.

Although the act itself is unforgivable, it also illuminates a larger societal problem we face; in that, all of the reported cases, not once was it indicated that a single Gambian has at least refused to be undressed, or forcibly removed from his own premise and forced to drink a putrid concotion.

Every natural law, begining with the divine one from Allah Himself, enjoins an individual to defend himself or herself and his dignity, using whatever means available at the time he or she is being assaulted. It may be that these awful roaming posses with the obvious sanction of the state may well have no difficulty in gathering and forcibly subjecting their victims to the planned abuses, but by God, it ought to be under fighting circumstances to validate the proposition that an individual would at least strive to maintain his dignity if an attempt is being made to so thoroughly abuse him.

Infact, the prinicipal reason the horrific chain of abuses have been unbroken throughout the bloody regime of Yahya Jammeh is that there has never been a case in which an individual or community has demonstrably resisted excessive abuses, hence ensuring an increase in both scope and depravity. As a result, abductions, disappearances, extra-judicial killings and torture have become routine instruments within Yahya Jammeh's kitty, and he has employed them regularly to serve his base instincts and hasn't had to pay any price, because most Gambians are so consumed with the idea of self preservation that literal enslavement sounds like a pretty good trade off for the illusion of safety.

All Gambians who have fallen victim to the regime's excesses have endured similar harrowing experiences - ranging from murders to long stints in dingy cells without medical treatment. Those who survive the terror have had no judicial recourse and often returned to their families broken and scared.

A population that is unprepared to defend itself against the incessant cruelty of a tyrant and his minions, can expect an escalating degree in the level of abuse and should just as quickly dispense itself of the notion that the abusers will discriminate in their madness.

Yahya Jammeh is an equal opportunity tyrant, in that he has a history of also going after those who have done his bidding in the past including triggermen and torturers.

Yahya's staying power with all it's attendant consequencies on the nation and it's people, has very little to do with either himself or the apparatus he presides over, but everything to do with innate weak character traits in a lot of Gambians ranging from ignorance, selfishness, instant gratification, suburnation of the truth, justice and honesty to expediency.

From this large pool, he is able to successively recruit murderers, liars, and every stripe of enablers from religious charlatans sporting scruffy beards and flowing robes to wide-eyed youth with little ambition beyond occasional beach parties and running around the presidential motorcades. Unless a significant portion of the population demonstrate a steely determination to confront this mad man, beginning with a steadfast resistance to any form of abuse directed at the person or community, we should not rule out the possibilty that Yahya Jammeh may actually preside over the modern world's first televised ritual human sacrifices complete with approving Imams, praise singers, the cabinet, members of parliament and security chiefs all sitting under a canopy in Kanilai watching the slaughter of people who just chose to be frog marched to their deaths, rather than fighting to death to protect themselves as their creator has urged them to do.

If a Gambian chooses not to fight physically to remove this devil of a president from office, that would be understandable. If he chooses to not participate in the flawed political process to remove this lunatic from office; that too would be understandable. But to submit oneself to a humiliating and dangerously ochestrated exercise in a feeble and pliant manner just to satisfy the banal instincts of an indolent leader is unworthy of a good person.

To say one has to subject oneself to purported magicians and thugs out of fear cannot be a credible defense. When invaders come to your homes, fight them with every ounce of energy you have. Don't accomodate any of their filthy demands!.
