*Fabakary Tombong Jatta*

*The majority leader of the Gambia’s parliament was deeply disturbed about
his party supporters’ fight over councillorship nomination in Abuko.*

Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, the APRC member for Serekunda East, explained
how he was “deeply embarrassed” about the rivalry between the backers of
Momodou Pika Jallow and Jang Bah. Mr. Jallow was nominated at the expense
of Mr. Bah who wielded huge support among Abuko ward voters. This flared
tempers in Mr. Bah’s camp resulting to what Hon. Jatta called “deeply
embarrassing confrontation.”

Mr. Jatta was so concerned about the political fallout that he traveled to
Abuko in an attempt to bury the hatchet. He wondered why Abuko – a tiny
fraction of Mr. Jatta’s mighty constituency – has been singled out for
creating “bad names for me.”

Hon. Jatta felt offended for being excluded from the Abuko crisis
management. He did not understand why an issue that could have been
internally solved was taken to the electoral commission. Hon. Jatta said
Bah should have followed the party’s procedures which would have guaranteed
him nomination a ticket on the ballot instead of trading misleading
information among his supporters. Describing the APRC as a party of all,
Mr. Jatta said the onus then lies on its supporters to follow the proper
channels if they desire to run for any elected office rather than trying to
imposing themselves on people.

Jatta however reminded his party supporters to be wary of the fact that
leadership is bestowed by Allah and not humans.

Jang Bah begged to differ. “I had no previous desire to run for
councillorship; I was only responding to the wishes of the people,” he
said, admitting to have filed late nomination papers. He endorsed Mr.
Jallow’s candidacy to maintain the party’s unity, much to the consternation
of his already bruised die-heart supporters who accused Mr. Jallow of
rampant corruption and mismanagement. But the majority leader said that
could be averted with proper transparency and accountability.
