CONAKRY, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Alpha Conde from the Rally of Guinean People (RPG) has won the presidential run-off by garnering 52.52 percent of the vote, according to the provisional results announced by the electoral commission late on Monday.
Guinea held the presidential run-off on Nov. 7 .
Born in 1938 in Boke in lower Guinea, Conde fled the country to seek refuge in France at the age of 21 after he became opposed to the then president Sekou Toure.
While in exile in France pursuing his education as a student, Conde intensified his political campaign against Toure. He was head of the black student union in France. He was later sentenced to death in absential by Toure for opposing to his regime.
Conde returned to Guinea in 1984 after the death of Toure. He formed his political party the Rally of the Guinean People ( RPG) in 1991 and contested the 1993 first election under the late military leader Lansana Conte in which he failed.
In 1998 Conde was arrested and jailed by the regime of Lansana Conte and he was accused of planning to lead a rebellion in the country.
Conde spent two years in prison and was later pardoned by Conte. After his release from prison, Conde went straight to Paris for medical check up.
He remained opposed to Conte until the death of Conte in 2008.
Conde has refused to join all past regimes as he accused them of bad governance and corruption.
In the first round of the presidential election held on June 27 this year, Conde won 43.69 percent of the vote.
