Senegal president fails to win
Opposition parties in Senegal have forced a second round of voting in
presidential elections for the first time in the country's history.
Offical results aren't yet available, but a spokesman for President Abdou
Diouf said he'd won forty three percent of the vote, well short of the fifty
percent he needed to win.
His main opponent Abdoulaye Wade is lying in second place, and will join Mr
Diouf in a runoff election next month.
The president's opponents say he failed to win because of inefficiency and
corruption in his government.
The BBC West Africa correspondent said the allegiance of the third placed
candidate, Mustaphe Niasse is now vital in determining the new president;
he's made it clear he won't support President Diouf.
