Hi Pa Modou!
Thanks for forwarding a part of the Local Government Act. There are some issues with this Act but the most glaring and suspicious reads:

"The councils may remove a mayor or chairperson from office by a resolution supported by two thirds of councillors, for abuse of office, corruption, misconduct, physical or mental incapacity."
Given that the newly elected mayor of Banjul is an independent, giving the council the power to remove him on such diffuse terms as "misconduct" is a cause for concern. This basically means that the council can thwart the wishes of the Banjulians who elected the mayor based on sheer majority.

Another cause for concern is:

"The council could ask the Local Government Service Commission to remove the Chief Executive or clerk for abuse of office, incompetence, misconduct, physical or mental incapacity."

Here also, there is the foundation for making the post a politcal appointment one. Thanks again for the forward and I hope my fears about the above sections will not be realised.

                                                                                        Buharry.
