Q: Ah! How can you say that freedom of earthly tyranny is more important than 
The Infinite Way?
 
A: I didn't mean to imply that. No, I didn't mean to imply that when I said I'd 
give up The Infinite Way. I meant if it were necessary to work in some spiritual 
cause for freedom that I might give up my personal activity of teaching or 
lecturing or writing. And I will illustrate that in this way: our function in 
life is not to fight the evils of the world with the weapons of the world. No 
weapon that is formed against thee can prosper if you do not take up the world's 
weapons. 

 
If you do, you may find yourself defeated. Our way is to take up the spiritual 
armor, the spiritual sword, the sword of the spirit, which means prayer and 
realization. And so if there were an evil threatening this world in any form, I 
would count it a great blessing to retire from public lecturing or teaching or 
writing and go off into the hills somewhere and pray; put into active operation 
that which I've learned in The Infinite Way. Because I have already discovered 
that through prayer we can overcome any form of evil there is on earth. And I 
have learned also that there is no other way of achieving it -prayer is the way.
 
Now then, that would not of course be true to those who know nothing of prayer 
or who know nothing of illumined prayer. I don't mean the prayer that's taught 
in churches. That's been going on for centuries, dozens of centuries, but it 
hasn't brought freedom to anybody anywhere at any time. But prayer as we 
understand it, which is a conscious communion with God, a conscious God-contact, 
does bring the overcoming of every form of discord, personal, family, community, 
national and international. 

 
Now, you will not see evidence of that on too big a scale, because it has not 
been tried on too big a scale, because there are not too many people in the 
world who know what prayer is. You can count them up very, very quickly without 
going far into mathematics, those who know the meaning of prayer. And that those 
who do, as indicated in scripture, ten righteous men could save a city. I don't 
know about the figure ten but I do know this, that a few men, a few people 
understanding that prayer means an actual contact with God, and sitting in the 
silence until that God-contact is realized, can overcome, first of all 
individually, secondly for the family group, next for the community group, 
ultimately nationally and internationally, all of the discords of earth.
 
Now, so far every one of us who has been engaged in any metaphysical or 
spiritual activity has seen the truth of this in individual healings. We have 
seen the evil laws of disease overcome. We have seen the evils of sin overcome, 
the evils of false appetite overcome. That's been going on now since the 
beginning of Christian Science, 1875. And before that, 1866, and through all of 
the other schools that have developed, we have been witnessing that illumined 
prayer, which means the conscious realization of God, does result in the 
overcoming of sin, disease, lack, limitation for individual you and me.
 
Now, we have also seen that in those families where this form of understanding, 
prayer, truth, is known, that the health of the family life is improved. Not 
only physically but mentally and morally. Wherever there is a mother governing 
her household through illumined prayer you will find a minimum of juvenile 
delinquency and of childhood diseases. That we have witnessed for years and 
years and years in this work.
 
Now then, in my personal experience I have witnessed the larger proof of this 
work in some, what we call capital and labor experiences, corporation and union 
activities. I have seen this, where one side and in some cases it was the 
capital side and in other cases it was the labor side, that where one side was 
willing to call in the power of spiritual prayer and abide by it, that harmony 
resulted without the use of force and with a joyous result for everyone 
concerned. 

 
I have also witnessed it in some of the affairs concerning our own government in 
the States where, on certain occasions when certain serious evils looked about 
ready to befall, the power of this conscious realization of God resulted in the 
overcoming of that experience. I can tell you one such experience very quickly. 

 
The Congress of the United States had been made a rubber stamp and was not 
functioning as a Congress. It had surrendered its powers to the President and it 
just accepted his Bills and rubber-stamped them into being, and that was that! 
And the only thing that stood between free government and dictatorship was the 
Supreme Court of the United States. With that out of the way we would have had 
totalitarian form of government. The President would have governed without a 
Congress and without a Supreme Court to stop him. 

 
Now, he'd already eliminated Congress, he still had the Supreme Court in his 
way. And he evolved a perfect scheme of doing away with it. Instead of nine men 
on the board whom he couldn't influence or buy or throw out, he decided to have 
a Bill passed in Congress increasing the Supreme Court to a membership of 
fifteen, which meant that he would appoint six stooges on it. And with those he 
would control the Supreme Court and put it out of existence and we would have 
had a totalitarian form of government. 

 
And one night while that Bill was due for consideration, sitting in my home in 
meditation – not about it, I had no thought of it, my mind was on realizing God 
-the voice said to me, "Do not go to bed tonight, sit up and pray about that 
Supreme Court Bill!" and I said, "Yes, Father!" And I sat there merely attaining 
a conscious … I had no words to use; I didn't outline what was to happen, 
whether the Bill should succeed or fail, I'd nothing to do with that. I had only 
one function to perform that night and that was to attain a conscious union with 
God, the actual experience of knowing that God was on the field and all is well. 
And at four o'clock that morning that happened. At four o'clock in the morning 
all of a sudden a great peace descended upon me and I knew that all was well, 
and I retired. Joel
