Beautiful Laye. Thanx for following up on this story. I am pleased that the Islamic Republic of Iran has given consent to interrogate the shipper or COURIER of the arms and munitions cache. It appears Gambia as destination was used as decoy or Plan B destination. Possibly at a fee.

Haruna.

Abuja: Iran has authorised Nigeriansecurity officials to interrogate one of its citizens accusedof bringing in rocket launchers, grenades and other explosivesthrough ship into the oil-rich African country.

Nigeria`s Minister of Foreign Affairs Odein Ajumogobiatoday told reporters here that he got the consent of theIranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who arrived hereto question an Iranian citizen involved in the case. "We may not be able to question the diplomat becausethat would contravene international law and I wish to add thatcontrary to what the security services have been saying theweapons were meant to be transshipped to the Gambia," he said.

Security agencies intercepted 13 containers conveyingthe ammunition in the country`s main port in Apapa, Lagos twoweeks ago.

The Nigerian minister gave the name of the Iranian whois now taking refuge within the country`s embassy in Abuja asAzimi Agajani with visa dated July 14, 2010 whereas thediplomat was simply identifies as Saed.

Ajumogobia said Nigeria would take necessary actionsif it found out that the shipment goes against internationallaw.

When the cargo was discovered, Israeli authoritiesbelieved the consignors were trying to discover a new route totransport arms to Gaza and was avoiding an old route where ablockade is in place. But Nigeria`s State Security Service (SSS) spokeswomanMarylin Ogar told reporters in Abuja on Wednesday that theship was destined for the African country because the Bill ofLading on the hidden cargo suggested that it conveyed Buildingmaterials comprising Glasswood and Pallets of stones withdestination as Nigeria.

The weapons which were described as similar to thoseused against United States forces in Afghanistan were conveyedto the port by MV CMA-CGM Everest registered in MarshallIslands and owned by a shipping company in France.

There were earlier suggestions that the ship passedthrough India on its way to Lagos but the shipping company,CMA-CGM, said that an Iranian trader had loaded the ship atBandar Abbas, a southern port city in Iran and made falsedeclarations.

The discovery of weapons became a sensitive issuebecause Nigeria`s capital Abuja witnessed bombings thatclaimed 14 lives during celebration of its 50th independenceanniversary last month.

Nigeria which has witnessed militant uprisings andkidnapping of oil workers in the oil rich delta region is alsopreparing for an election next year. ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interfaceat: http://listserv.icors.org/archives/gambia-l.html
