*Reporters sans frontières soutient l'opération "Journée presse morte"*
Le 17 juillet 2012, les rotatives des imprimeries cesseront de tourner et
les ondes garderont le silence à l'occasion d'une "Journée presse morte"
organisée au Mali. Reporters sans frontières apporte tout son soutien à
cette grève générale des médias maliens. En signe de solidarité,
l'organisation demande que cessent enfin les violations de la liberté
d'information qui perdurent, sans interruption, depuis près de quatre mois.
Une marche partira à 9 heures du siège du quotidien *L'Indépendant* et
s'achèvera devant la Primature, à Bamako. Un sit-in est également organisé
à 14 heures devant l'ambassade du Mali à Paris, par l'association Union
Presse et Communication des Maliens de France (UPCOM-F).
Cette initiative fait suite à l'agression perpétrée, le 12 juillet dernier,
contre le directeur de publication de *L'Indépendant*, *Saouti Haidara*. Ce
dernier, d'abord soigné à Bamako, a été évacué le lendemain à Dakar
(Sénégal) pour y subir de nouveaux examens médicaux. Plus d'informations :

Au-delà d'un mouvement de solidarité à l'égard de leur confrère de *
L'Indépendant*, les organisateurs entendent envoyer un signal fort aux
acteurs de la transition au Mali. "Les autorités doivent offrir des
garanties de sécurité aux journalistes", a confié à Reporters sans
frontières le président de la Maison de la presse de Bamako, Makan Koné,
qui attend un "engagement véritable" de la part du pouvoir exécutif.
"Tous les acteurs de la transition (au pouvoir à Bamako) doivent prendre
leurs responsabilités", car il s'agit d'une "opération de représailles
sciemment montée contre la presse malienne qui ne fait que son travail",
avait-il déclaré à l'*Agence France-Presse (AFP)*. "C'est la démocratie que
ces gens veulent tuer", s'était-il inquiété.

*Reporters Without Borders backs one-day media strike*
Reporters Without Borders voices its support for the one-day strike planned
by Mali’s media for tomorrow, when radio stations will suspend broadcasting
and no newspapers will be printed. In a show of solidarity, the
organization issues a call for an end to the constant media freedom
violations of the past four months.
Journalists and other protesters will set off at 9 a.m. from the
headquarters of the daily *L'Indépendant* and march to the prime minister’s
office. The Press and Communication Union of Malians in France (UPCOM-F)
will meanwhile stage a sit-in at 2 p.m. outside the Malian embassy in Paris.
The protests are being organized in response to the severe beating that *
L'Indépendant* editor *Saouti Haidara* received from a group of armed men
on 12 July. After initial treatment in Bamako, Haidara was flown the next
day to the Senegalese capital of Dakar for more extensive medical tests.

As well as demonstrating support for Haidara, the protest organizers want
to send a clear signal to those responsible for the current transition in
Mali. “The authorities must offer security guarantees to journalists,”
Bamako press club president *Makan Koné* told Reporters Without Borders,
adding that he wanted a “real commitment” from the government.
Referring to the government in Bamako, Koné told *Agence France-Presse*:
“All the participants in the current transition must accept their
responsibility [because it was] a deliberately organized reprisal operation
against the Malian media, which were just doing their work. It is democracy
that these people want to kill.”
