Haruna,

You are a masterful polemicist. I wondered for a minute whether we are on the same thread. What transpired at the United Front is irrelevant here. With two extra parties the dynamics would've been different. Now that you have emptied your chest about convention and circumstance, polemics aside, I hope you answer my question directly.

Cheers,
Jah

Edi, this exercise of delegates choosing leaders should have been completed by each political party worth its name. PRIOR to forming a coalition or alliance of parties. The UDP held a congress for that purpose and NRP graced that congress as invited guest. NRP never held a congress. PDOIS held half of a congress with promise to complete their congress at some later date. I suspect the Convent completed PDOIS' congress. GPDP never held congress. Mr. Martin represents himself to the PDOIS Convent.

The people of Gambia did not ask the people to form a united coalition or alliance because we understood that the people had already chosen their leaders of these "serious" political parties. The people of Gambia urged the leaders of the parties so chosen by their parties to come together and forge a united alliance/coalition for the purpose of removing Yahya from malgoverning Gambia. The presidential election is held to elect a president, not the leader of a political party or representatives of the national assembly. The NAMs are to be chosen at the NAM election among the candidates of the distinct parties. The people do not want to choose NAMs for the prospective united alliance because each constituency reserves the right and free choice of their representatives to the National assembly. That right must not be subsumed in a presidential election. You will be delighted to know that it was the leaders of their respective parties who decided on the PDOIS Convent. NOT the Gambian people in their rich diversity. The Convent was an abrogation of democracy. An expedition into dictatorship.

It should be interesting to view a video of the Convent in order to get the full flavour of the coup de gras.

A flag bearer is determined only after the FLAG has been identified and made. The flag is a united opposition alliance/coalition.

Haruna.

Suntou, thanks for the forward.

''It was recommended that proportional representation be introduced to enable
the UDP to have its majority and then leave the delegates to select one person
among the opposition to be the flag bearer. After the selection of the
flagbearer a motion could then be introduced to propose that the delegates make
a decision for the flag bearer to contest under a party ticket or an Independent
ticket. When the motion is seconded and subjected to voting whatever the
delegates decide would be accepted as binding to all. ''

IMO this recommendation would have been a perfect compromise because it takes
two most contentious issues into account - party sizes and putting the flag
bearer issue to a vote.

Folks, If you think this was a missed opportunity please advance some reasons?

If you think this compromise wasn't good enough please advance some reasons?

Cheers,
Jah
