İHH begins relief work in disaster-stricken Haiti
The Turkey-based Humanitarian Aid Foundation (İHH) is working in
coordination with a US-based charity group to provide disaster relief in the
aftermath of an earthquake that struck Haiti earlier this week.

Aid groups from around the world are rushing to support post-disaster
relief efforts following the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck the Caribbean
nation of Haiti on Tuesday, causing massive infrastructural damage and
leaving tens of thousands dead or missing. With the Turkish Red Crescent
responding earlier this week to the disaster, the Turkey-based İHH has also
joined the relief effort in collaboration with the US-based Zakat Foundation
charity group. İHH President Bülent Yıldırım told Today’s Zaman that the two
groups have sent a cargo plane to Haiti with a team of volunteers to
determine the extent of the damage and assess specific needs ahead of more
extensive aid efforts.
“The earthquake in Haiti is for us reminiscent of the Marmara earthquake of
1999 and has affected us deeply. For that reason, we’ve lost no time in
filling a cargo plane with medical supplies, food, blankets, tents and staff
and sending it to the island. Our plane has departed from the US; it will
represent Turkey there, and we hope it will help assuage the pain of the
people there and tend to their wounds. We will also distribute monetary aid to
earthquake victims. Our teams there will perform the necessary evaluations
and determine what the needs on the ground are, and the scope of our
continued aid efforts and shipments will be determined accordingly,” he said.
