*Dr Ousman Jarju, a medical doctor working at the Edward Francis Small
Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul, yesterday testified as the sixth
prosecution witness in the ongoing criminal trial involving the state
and Matarr Bojang and Fatou Njie, before the High Court in Banjul,
presided over by Justice Abdulahi Mikailu.*

The accused persons, Matarr Bojang and Fatou Njie are standing trial on
a single count of rash and negligent act causing the death of one
Fatoumata Gassama, a fifty-year-old lady at the Kairaba Pharmaceuticals,
Independence Drive in Banjul, on 3rd October 2011.

Dr Jarju in his testimony told the court that he has been working at the
EFSTH for the past three years and his responsibilities include
conducting ward rounds, consultancies and on call duties. The witness
told the court that on the 3rd October 2011, whilst he was on routine
work at the Accident and Emergency Unit a lady (the deceased) was
brought into the said ward.

The witness said after he enquired as to what happened to the deceased,
he was informed that the lady (Fatoumata Gassama) was injected with a
procaine penicillin and she collapsed. According to PW6, "One thing was
evident in the patient, there was no cardio pulmonary activity.
"Immediately we knew what was involved and our impression was pulmonary
shock, and considering the fact that the distance was short from the
hospital, we immediately tried to do something if there might be a
chance for the patient," he said.

Dr Jarju said after they did all they could, including administering a
resuscitation mechanism, which lasted for about 15 minutes, and stopped,
they discovered that the patient wasn't responding, adding that they
found out that the patient was in the same state when she was
brought. He said there was no sign of life in the patient and that the
patient's relatives were informed that she was not responding to
resuscitation and the BID form was filled, after the patient was
confirmed dead.

The said BID form was tendered by the prosecution led by state counsel,
Saffie Sankareh and it was admitted in evidence and marked as an exhibit.

Dr Jarju explained that the procaine penicillin is among the family of
penicillin that is well known for its highly allergenic properties and
documented that about 10% of the world population is at risk of having
reaction to procain penicillin.

He cautioned that as a result of its high risk, the medical fraternity,
especially the medical doctors, are always conscious of giving it as a
medication.

The witness pointed out that some of the precautions include taking the
medical history of the patient, screening for any allergic tendency,
adding that in a well developed area, the patient should have been given
a test dose and placed under observation.
