The e-mail below, as usual, came from an unimpeachable source at State
House.

Coach:

The situation in The Gambia is deteriorating by the day. Family heads are
now abandoning their families, simply because of lack of the ability to
provide basic necessities of life. Foreigners, equally, are leaving not only
the urban areas but the rural settings as well, owing to lack of food
coupled with the likelihood of being harassed by immigration officers.

In addition to the serious food shortage in the country, the petrol
situation is precarious at best, despite the government's assurances that
fuel will be available in a few days time. In fact, it's now over six months
since regualr supply was interrupted.

By the way, Baba Jobe has been given the exclusive right (by the Yahya
Jammeh) to import petrol into The Gambia. I believe that's what SoS Famara
Jatta meant when he recently said that The Gambian Government was going to
let the private sector manage the industry.

Coach, on a brighter note, please do tell your colleagues writing on the Net
that things are now beginning happen in The Gambia, given your endlessly
hard-hitting articles exposing Yahya Jammeh's tyranny and corruption. In
fact, I have been informed by an N.I.A insider that Lang Conteh has been
reporting to the N.I.A these past few days which, in my view, may be a sign
of things to come - things falling apart in other words!

Amadou Samba, meanwhile, has started turning down business partnerships
proposed by potential foreign investors in the country. Perhaps Amadou is
beginning to develop cold feet; and it would appear that Jammeh himself is
also developing cold feet. In fact, instead of going to face the farmers in
his annual meet-the-people tour re-scheduled twice already, information
reaching me at my desk is that Yahya is thinking of performinbg the Hajj
instead - which would be his fourth.

And for your information, SoS Manlafy Jarju is also performing the Hajj this
year. He will be part of the Government delegation to Mecca - meaning that
the State is paying for Manlafy to perform the Hajj.

Nowadays, Coach, "supaKanja" is out of the reach of even the modestly rich
folks. Three okra sells for D5. Last week, it was one okra for one dalasi.
