PART 4:
There are some interesting things in Jesus' life. One of the most interesting is
that which occurred in the garden at Gethsemane in which he apparently underwent
great distress, and prayed to God that if it was possible the cup be taken away
from him. Actually this is highly contradictory because it is completely out of
character. From all that we know of Jesus, both historically and esoterically,
or through occult research, he was not exactly the weakest man who has ever
walked the Earth, nor the most cowardly individual. He was a workman. He was
strong. He certainly was a very brave individual. There have been many people
throughout history who have gone to apparent death and laughed in the faces of
the people who were torturing them. So it is a little strange to conceive of
this man who was enlightened and illumined by a cosmic consciousness, who
himself saw through the illusion of death, suddenly become afraid. Unless we can
go deeper into that pattern and see what was really occurring.
What was occurring is that one of the patterns that the Christ came to do
through the instrumentality of Jesus' consciousness was to literally impregnate
the etheric structure of the Earth, and to incarnate not only through a physical
body of a human being but through what a human being is. A human being has links
with every kingdom on the Earth. A human being is partially mineral, partially
vegetable, partially animal, partially devic, partially elemental. There is no
kingdom on the Earth that does not have its correspondence within man.
Man is a synthetic being. He is a composite being. That is his function, that is
his glory, to be able to draw all into himself and integrate it and manifest the
oneness of it. Through the oneness that a human being represents, it is possible
to move out into all the kingdoms of the Earth, and this is exactly what the
Christ did. This is really the true crucifixion. It was not so much hanging
Jesus on the physical cross, but it was the entry of the cosmic Christ into the
physical, etheric, mental, emotional energy patterns of the planetary body
itself.
From that point onward the Christ was no longer an educative force standing
outside the planet, beckoning evolution forward. It became a very powerful force
operating within the very structure of the planet itself, on really the lowest
level, that is right down to nuclear levels, atomic levels. From that standpoint
it could provide the perfect counterbalance, the momentum necessary to overcome
the downward pull that was threatening mankind, a pull that on the one hand was
quite necessary, and yet on the other hand was becoming out of balance.
It is from that point that the Christ has been functioning – one of its
functions for two thousand years. It is not the only function. When I say that
the cosmic Christ entered the Earth, it does not mean that it left the cosmic
levels. We cannot think of this in spatial terms – leaving the cosmos and
entering the Earth. The Christ is not a point that travels like we travel from
here to London. The Christ is a presence. By focusing that presence in its
cosmic aspects of itself, it establishes for this planet an energy operative
within the framework of everything that exists. This is a cosmic energy, a
Christ energy, a highly stimulating energy.
We have the demonstration of Buddha's life, who taught truth, wise
discrimination, balance. And we have the demonstration of Jesus' life, who
taught love, caring for people, for all life. Those two demonstrations have
worked within human consciousness. Actually they have provided the framework
through which Limitless Love and Truth can manifest as a concept, drawing upon
these two great concepts of the past.
Man has not really ever fulfilled the Christ pattern. There is a very good
reason for this; it being that man has never been ready to fulfil that pattern.
In a sense just as coming events cast their shadow before them, everything that
happens in one cycle is the shadow of something that is going to happen in a
later cycle. Jesus, in the Christ pattern he represented, was in some aspects a
shadow of what is happening now. After two thousand years of activity within the
etheric structure of the Earth, this presence has a great deal of power and a
great deal of influence that it did not have at that time.
Mankind has been living with the concepts of love and truth for well over two
thousand years, but certainly for two thousand years. He may not have been doing
a great deal with them, but he has been doing something with them. We cannot
discount the tremendous patterns that the Christian church has influenced in
terms of establishing an altruistic consciousness within humanity, something
that really did not exist, certainly in the western word to any great degree.
It does not exist as far as the practice of oriental religions go, although
certainly they teach it. But the concepts have been there and they have been
enlarging themselves, until at this point we come to the time when are living
and experiencing what is the actual reality of the resurrection and the
ascension. The tomb, the three days in hell that Jesus or the Christ was
involved in, has been the involvement in the affairs of the Earth, even down to
the deepest levels. It is not the easiest thing in the world for one force that
is basically an arising force, to associate itself and to come into intimate
contact with opposite forces which are downward moving forces, materialising
forces. But that is exactly what the Christ has done. In so doing, he has
counterbalanced these forces so that man's consciousness has been able to arise
to the extent that it has.
PART 5:
We come now to a time when we are asked to go a third step. We are asked to wake
up, as Buddha did, to the reality of what is around us. We are asked to link
with the cosmic levels and be aware of their outpouringness so that we become
anointed with the vision of our greater selves. We are asked to do exactly what
the Earth has done and what Limitless Love and Truth is the representation of:
to externalise this vision through attuning to the Christ within us and
demonstrating it. Nothing less than this will suffice in this age.
The Christ that we look back upon was a unique expression. It was, in a way, a
planetary event in that if it had not occurred, there is good reason to suppose
that this planet would not have been able to survive in the way that we know it.
There was that aspect of the Christ which is, occultly speaking, definitely the
saviour of the planet, but not in terms of men's souls, not in terms of
preparing man for a heavenly estate, except allegorically. What is has done is
saved him from his attachment to the patterns that move him, in a very literal
cause and effect relationship into greater and greater involvement with matter.
The energy that the Christ represents is the instantaneous breaking and
transmutation of the cosmic chain that an individual may weave through his life.
Such is the love and what is called the grace of this power. But this has never
been fully realised yet. This is what we are asked to realise. This force has,
through its intimate blending with the planet and with each of us, created that
condition in which we are all much freer to perceive and attune to our higher
selves. That is its job. That is what the Christ is throughout the universe:
that which attunes all life to its next highest level, and gives it the
nourishment and the support and the instruction and the experience it needs to
become one with that level. When it has become one with that level, then
suddenly the Christ is seen in a still greater vision leading men onto the next
height.
Always it is that which truly unites us with God, God representing the divine,
creative reality within us that we can never express because we are always
unfolding it. As we unfold one level of it, we become aware of a greater level
of it, we become aware of a greater level to move on to. We are always uniting
with this, in increasingly greater degrees.
You understand I have to express this in human terms, which is somewhat
time-bound. One can get the sense of, `Good grief! This thing goes on endlessly!
Don't we ever reach a stopping point?' But that is utterly meaningless to the
illumined consciousness. There is no sense of time. There is no sense of goal in
the normal way of conceiving a goal. There is this sense of motion, of
expression, and of great creativity. Infinity is not a frightening concept.
The Christ pattern then, represents together with this planet, a unique
manifestation. This planet in a special way became one with the cosmic Christ.
Out of that oneness has been born literally a new planet. This is the planet in
which we become aware of the reality of what we are. We awaken to it. We are
anointed by it. Through this response to what calls to us from our higher
levels, we find the Christ within us being naturally drawn forth without effort,
without strain.
The pattern of the crucifixion was absolutely necessary over the past two
thousand years because man had to consciously, through an effort of will, break
his attachment to the downward pulling forces that are not evil forces, they are
just moving his consciousness in the wrong direction and we had to take steps to
do this. If it meant suffering, which in many cases it did, because that is the
way man interpreted it, he would not let go easily, then man had to suffer.
The Christ pattern intrinsically is not a suffering pattern. It is a pattern
leading from strength to strength, and from joy to joy. It is that pattern which
we are now asked to manifest.
All of this is only background. What is being represented at Findhorn and by
other centres like it and by individuals throughout the world, who are so
attuned to this pattern, is a liberation of this cosmic Christ who has been, in
a way, imprisoned within the planet. Being carried on this tremendous uprush of
power and joy to becoming at one with the true Christ pattern that flows through
each of us and within each of us. An attunement which really requires no
struggle, no stress, only that we relax to it and allow the normal, natural,
growing forces within us to take us to it – (it is a clumsy way of expressing
it, because the Christ is not an it and it is not a place to move us to that
level of consciousness, or that perception of consciousness where we realise the
tremendous joy and a tremendous oneness that we share with all that is, and all
that ever will be.
That background may place what people at Findhorn are doing in some perspective.
They are evolving a group Christ. They are, by demonstrating a new civilisation,
a new way of doing things, performing the Christ function of drawing that same
awareness out of the world.
So in a very real sense Findhorn represents the Second Coming. Any individual,
any centre, who so embodies the new that it becomes a magnetic source to draw
the new out of the rest of the world, also embodies the Second Coming.
