Thanx for sharing Dad. I commend Foroyaa for dedicating this Republican
memoriam to Femi Peters. I associate myself with this editorial in its
entirety.
Thanx.
Haruna.

THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF REPUBLICAN DAY AND FEMI PETERS
24thApril 2010 is a day for reflection on the birth of the Republic. This
is the day when each Gambian becomes a sovereign and equal proprietor of
the Country. Each has equal power and right to select representatives to run
the country or seek the mandate of the people to be the representatives.
The Birth of the Republic gave each Gambian Freedom of Association including
political association and assembly to promote collective political
Principles, Policies and Programmes. It makes it a requirement that taxation should
be linked to representation. It makes it obligatory for taxes to be
utilised to promote social services. It makes it a right for each citizen to be
entitled to social services without any form of discrimination.
The Republic makes it a requirement for the leaders to derive their
authority to govern from the consent of the people. It also empowers the people
to have a choice in selecting their leaders. This calls for a genuine
multiparty system.
As we reflect on our rights and duties as sovereign citizens of the
country on this 40 th Anniversary of the Republic, our minds and hearts went back
to the reasons why Femi Peters was arrested and eventually incarcerated.
We expected that Femi would be released on the 40 anniversary of the
Republic. This has not happened. It is therefore important to remind those in
authority of the need to review Femi’s case, set aside his conviction and
facilitate his release. This will augur well with all those who cherish
freedom and the sovereignty of the individual Gambian.
