The Security Watch Africa at its 8th Annual Awards ceremony held Friday at the Sheraton Hotel Resort and Spa, conferred a prestigious ‘Golden Star Award’ for Distinguished Leadership in Africa on the president of The Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh.

Others who received awards beside the president included, Ousman Sonko, the minister of Interior, who received the Golden Star Award for National Security in West Africa; Yankuba Sonko, the inspector general of Police, Gold Medal Award for Policing in West Africa; and Buba Sagnia, the director general of The Gambia Immigration Department, a Gold Medal Award for distinguished Service in The Gambia.

The award conferred on the Gambian leader, which was received on his behalf by the vice president and minister of Women’s Affiars, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, was in recognition of his giant strides in promoting peace and stability in the sub-region and beyond, whilst Minister Sonko, IGP Sonko and DG Sagnia’s awards were based on their hard work and dedication to promoting security in the country.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony Patrick Agbambu, the international coordinator and chief executive officer of Security Watch Africa, said the awards ceremony is an annual event which started back in 2004, with the aim of recognising, appreciating, and encouraging individuals and organisations who have excelled in security administration, operations, practice and governance in Africa.

He added that the award was prevously hosted by Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.
Receiving the Award on behalf of the Gambian leader, VP Njie-Saidy thanked Security Watch Africa for the award in recognition of President Jammeh’s efforts in promoting peace and stability in Africa.

She told the gathering that security is a priority of President Jammeh’s government, adding that he gives lot of prominence to women empowerment and security. The vice president called on West African states to promote community policing, saying it is a move in promoting good relationship between civilians and the security.

For his part, Alhaji Aliyu Mahama, the former vice president of the Republic of Ghana said that Africa cannot utilise its resources without peace and stability therefore, people must work collectively to bring African integration.
He also thanked the Gambia government for hosting this year’s event.
