South Africa’s President ‘ Resolved to Solve’ Deyda’s Murder Mystery

The South African president, Thabo Mbeki, has reportedly made himself available to help solve the mystery surrounding the gruesome murder of Mr Deyda Hydara.

A leading journalist and Managing Editor of  The Point newspaper for many years, Hydara was gunned down point-blank at around 11:30 PM on 16 December 2004 in Kanifing while driving home from work.

Ten months after his murder which has marked a turning point in the country’s journalism history, the perpetrator(s) could not  be brought to justice. This snail’s pace in apprehending the slain journalist’s murderer(s) has not gone down well with many who expect a speedy solution to the case which surprisingly is still wrapped in mystery.

But now, it seems there is a glimmer of hope and a promise for an ultimate answer to the question hundreds of violence-wary Gambian journalists have been asking, and continue to ask, since that fateful day.

According to reports, the South African president has expressed his willingness to consult his Gambian counterpart with a view to helping unravel the mystery that has tainted this country’s democratic credentials.

“ I was not aware of the killing of Deyda Hydara in The Gambia. But I promise to engage the Gambia government on the issue,” Mr Mbeki was quoted as saying.

According to the editor - in- chief of The Independent, Mr Musa Saidykhan, President Mbeki, was concerned about the killing of Deyda Hydara in The Gambia and is keen to use his good office to help resolve the issue.

Mr. Saidykhan, who had the opportunity to meet Mbeki in South Africa lately, said the South African president feels sympathetic and concerned about the precarious media situation in The Gambia.

While some see this manifest determination on the part of president Mbeki as a step closer to apprehending Deyda’s killers, others are cautiously optimistic about such an outcome.

However, it is also widely believed that with the intervention of such a reputable, prudent, and experienced leader as Mbeki, a new era of hope would be heralded for the millions around the world calling for the arrest of Hydara’s murderer(s).
