ATT Jr, Kejau, and Dampha represent a stream of thought vis-a-vis the nature of leadership in political Gambia, whether we are talking government, or opposition, and their position may therefore not be wholly unreasonable. I almost teased ATT Jr that notwithstanding his failure thus far to amuse Kejau about Harunasilo, this question about how we should relate to the opposition leadership on the ground may be an area where their views coincide completely. Kejau did not disappoint, and Dampha threw in the usual punch about domicile and legitimacy. My love for these guys is insufficient to restrain my instinctive rejection of their position that we should never even constructively engage our heroes on the ground. Criticising them is viewed blasphemous.

In the unlikely event that ATT Jr succeeds in enticing my embrace of Harunasilo, I am happy to regard my prophet, or, god, in the same way Catholics regard Papal pronouncements when he speaks ex-cathedera. As we are talking public life, I am unable to accord the unquestioning obeisance required on issues of faith to our opposition politicians. Once I am able to follow the recommendation of ATT Jr, Kejau, and Dampha on how to relate to our opposition leaders regarding questions of public significance, I would no longer feel able to constructively engage His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh (the Professor), aka SHEPAD.

Umaru Fofana could have written his piece simply by eavesdropping on the L, the Mighty, and online outlets concentrating on Gambian issues. In so far as he failed to inform us of Halifa's perspective regarding internal democracy within opposition Gambia, he may be rightly accused of flippancy in light of the unsubstantiated assertion that the interviewee waxed "philosophical". Fofana should let us make that judgement by simply reporting what he was told.
In the fast moving pace of Internet communication, there is a lesson for Ousainu to respond promptly to political queries, especially those raising no intricate issues requiring further research, and or consultation.

Contrary to ATT Jr's accusation, I am not fixated on NADD, but if we are to 'peacefully' dislodge the Professor from No. 1 Marina Parade, we need a united front with the same fundamentals. I am happy to plead with our opposition leaders to embrace the logic of a NADD-type arrangement and make it work for 2011, but I am able to live with whatever result the ongoing informal conversations produced, even five presidential candidates against the Professor.

Thanks for your insight, and I hope ATT Jr, Kejau, and Dampha are able to take Ousainu and Halifa on their of-repeated perspective of public life that they are our servants.

Haruna, forgive my intervention here but I think you might be kind of overeacting to this Fofana issue. After all, you head the Global DEMOCRACY Project and Mr. Ousainou Darboe is head of the United DEMOCRATIC Party. I think we should all try to be tolerant of dissent and such lapses as may occur in the course of our discourses with journalists and other persons. While in London, I was interviewed by Focus on Africa Magazine for postng alongside my article when the current issue is posted online. My interviewer asked me whether I did not think that the Gambian opposition, as reported by Umaru Fofafna, was itself not undemocratic. My response was that I wouldn't call them undemocratic until they so prove to be once they are in control of our government. I agree that it might be problematic to refer to the UDP or PDOIS as undemocratic since they are yet to be in control of our government machinery. However, I believe that the UDP and PDOIS should be
able to swallow such labels - however unjustified - should they be slapped on them because they are fighting for democracy in our country. Your current anger reminds me of a book I read a couple of years ago titled "The Difficulty of Tolerance." I guess tolerance is something that we all expect of those we criticize but which, often, we find it hard to practice ourselves. Human nature? Maybe. Anyway, I just wanted to share these brief thoughts with you and my other good brothers who have, perhaps legitimately, been upset by Umaru Fofana's depiction of the Gambian opposition.

This Fofana idiot is fucking with us.

How does his radio show or report emergency become an urgency for Gambia's opposition party leaders??? The show can go to hell for all we care. We are concerned with a nation's governance not a shady-tree journalist's show.

Plus, the idiot needs to be schooled in the difference between a tardy response and a REFUSAL to respond. Does Fofana know that everyone is not sitting at a computer or on the internet waiting for e-mail communication??? That is the laziest way to communicate - E-mail. What about those who don't even have reliable internet service or access. These BBC blowhards are cocksuckers.

Like I said, I'm not even talking about the nuances of email communication and its deficiencies. I'm focused on the lies inside of Umaru's tabloid gossip that he's passing for an investigative report. The devil is in the friggin detail. Haruna. And fuck complaining through BBC channels. I do my complaints right here. So whatever this BBC personality is that is encouraging me to complain directly to the BBC instead of on Ellen, I say the idiots can come here t get the friggin complaint. Next time they'll think twice before publishing garbage. MQJGDT. Darbo. Al Mu'Umin.

JDAM, I'll share with you some ideas because I see you are fascinated with this NADD business. You need to let it go men. We must not hold ourselves hostag e to a debilitating arrangement that may only have peripheral affect on our solution matrices. I gotta go see Tiger at Eastlake for now. See you my good man. Fofana still fall short in accepting his error in judgement. Ousaionou as reported on some online newspapers is also on travel. Did Fofana knows the schedules of the party leader? Did he know whether Ousainou has access to internet prompto as he was alluding to?

In future, he should plan his interviews and talks well ahead to alert respective groups or individuals about his programs. This will help make issues much clearer. This is not to say, we don't want our party leaders to be accountable and promt in dealing with queries. The party leaders need to adjust to modern urgency and timeliness whilst catering for their every day survival.
Fofana may be forgiven this time, but the BBC is too major as an opinion vehicle to play with people's intentions.

Dear Mr Daboe,
Thank you very much sir for your email. As you may have noticed from my auto reply I am on vacation but am taking time off to quickly respond to your email.
As you may see from the email chain below, I wrote to you on 22 August just a day after speaking to you on the phone. You replied almost two weeks later even though I had stressed to you in that telephone conversation that a quick response to the questions was required because of the short time line for my research. Frankly if you had done so even a week later, it could still have made it into the magazine which was running far behind time. And the fact that you didn't even acknowledge receipt of the email to give you some time, did not help either and made it apparent, at least up to then, that you did not wish to reply to it.
In my reply to your response, which like I say came almost two weeks late, I did make it clear to you that it was far too late for the magazine but that I would make a passing reference to it in my radio report on the issue which I did and you can still listen to that on the BBC website.
The article in question did not cause any undue harm to anyone as it clearly did not set out to do that, and if only you had got in touch with me in good time, this would have been avoided.
I hope we avoid a repeat of this in the future.
All the best Sir.

Hello Mr. Fofana,

I read with dismay that I "refused to comment via email" whilst I was out of the country on vacation.  I would have expected that you would state that at the time of going to press you had not received a reply from me.  Your email to me dated 4th September, 2009 in which you indicated that my reply came a little bit too=2 0late for the Focus on Africa Magazine article proves that I did not "refuse" to comment.  In fact, you indicated that you will use some of my answers as quotes in your presentation on Gambia.

I hope in the future you will not rush to conclusions that paint a negative picture of interviewees.

I have copied a gentleman who saw your piece and commented on it in one of the Gambia fora.

Regards,

Ousainu Darboe
