Jobe the act is vandalism. It does not rise to high crimes. If its any consolation, the vandals and the victims are all muslim. I think? I think the vandals must be caught and punished with 100 lashes each and sequestration to reproduce the idols. What do you think? I want you to relax first.

Subject: [G_L] BARBARIC DESECRATION

The unwanton destruction of the religious and cultural relics in Timbuktu constitute barbaric desecration and an international crime.Any justification of these acts of insanity on religious grounds is unacceptable and unfounded.
Apart from The Unesco declaration of these sites as " cultural/heritage sites",it is sheer crash stupidity and vandalism to destroy 500 year old Tombs (home of 333 Sufi Saints),because these ignorant Fanatics beleive they are idolatrous and unacceptable in Islam. What about all the "rites of passage" and other Pilgrimage visits to similar sites in Saudi Arabia, considered obligatory during such visits. Are these sites to be desecrated too in the name of Islam? What about the pyramids of Egypt?could this be an act of Racial Jealousy against Black African historical achievement such as has happened to the sphinx in Egypt?

One would have hoped that the toothless African Union would have risen from her Slumber and help save these important Heritage sites for posterity.May be Ecowas is too busy begging the west to provide arms and ammunition to face a rag tag desert indisciplined gang of an army in Northern Mali.

Aib Jobe
