What a gross miscarriage of justice. Mr Ousman Jammeh does not at all deserve being jailed for 3 years for a simple administrative oversight. He could have been asked to refund the Government the total amount of salaries unduly paid to Sering cham and further fined for a reasonable amount not exceeding half of the monies inappropriately  received by Sering Cham.

Gambians certainly live in interesting times.

Gambia: Breaking News: EX SG OUSMAN JAMMEH JAILED FOR THREEE YEARS!

EX SG OUSMAN JAMMEH JAILED FOR THREEE YEARS!
Ousman Jammeh, the former Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service has been sentenced to three years with hard labor today by a magistrate court in Banjul.  The former SG is serving time in prison on economic crime and abuse of office related charges, the court heard.
The charges on count one -negligence of official duty; the accused is said to have between the months of July and November 2011 in the city of Banjul, being employed as secretary general and head of the Civil Service, failed to authorize the PMO to stop the salary of Serign Cham, the former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs.

On count two - abuse of office; the accused is alleged to have between the months of July and November 2011 in Banjul abused his office by virtue of his position as SG and head of the Civil Service of the government of The Gambia to wit: allowed Serign Cham, the former permanent secretary, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs to receive his salaries after being dismissed from the Civil Service.

On count three -economic crimes; the accused in the months of July and November 2011 in Banjul, by virtue of his position as the secretary general to wit: corruptly and dishonestly caused economic loss worth of D90, 000 to the government of The Gambia by allowing Serign Cham, the former permanent secretary, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs to receive his salaries after being dismissed from the Civil Service. Cell number 1 ( 49) inmates murder, armed robbers, petty stealing, drug
Immediately after his sentencing, Mr. Jammeh was whisked away to prison.  He was first held at a crowded cell number five at the Mile Two main yard.  The convicted felon was later moved to cell number one the same day, a roving Freedom Newspaper informant said.
There are about forty nine inmates at cell number one. Cell number one is situated at the main yard. It houses convicted murderers, armed robbers, drug traffickers, and petty stealing perpetrators.
Ousman Jammeh has been sandwiched among these dangerous inmates.  Some of the inmates are very violent. The former SG must learn to cope with prison life.
“ Under Yahya Jammeh’s rule, nothing is impossible. I was saddened by Ousman’s ordeal. He is now a convicted prisoner. He is being held at cell number one at the main yard.  For some reasons, they decided to move him from his original cell number five to cell number one,” said our source.
" Ousman's conviction will serve as an eye-opener to other public servants. This man called Yahya Jammeh enjoys arresting, torturing, and killing our people. Ousman Jammeh himself never dreamt of coming to Mile Two. Where is he now? Gambians should open their eyes and know that Yahya Jammeh's agenda is to destory this country; its patriotic sons and daughters before his imminent fall."
