Demba, Darbo Jula and all those who expressed interest in volunteering
for the atlas project. I understand the issues that come with working
with volunteers, the reason I have been working on this alone over the
past 7 years. Despite the shortcomings of relying on volunteer service,
I am reluctant to embrace the idea of motivating student involvement
through stipends or any other monetary compensation. First there is the
issue of how much, where will the funds come from and sustainability of
any compensatory scheme, ... the list goes on. Second I believe the most
effective motivator will be opportunity for students to interact with
established experts (content providers or editors) from whom they can
learn from. This I believe will go a long way to foster an environment
and culture of mentoring. It is possible that some financial rewards
could be available during such interactions i.e scholarships but should
not be the main driving force. As for how to publicize this and other
aspects of the project, I will ask all who can to pass on the word. I am
talking to folks in and outside the Gambia as to how to institutionalize
the process.

For those who want to help but asking how, I have outlined the following
to address similar query from a sister list - the Community of Gambian
Scholars. These are some of the ways volunteers can help.

1. As members of advisory team to help keep the mission of Atlas and
provide guidance as to what can be done to realize it. This team will
may be required meet with editors once or twice in the year to discuss
whats done and whats planned. Any major additions (eg thematic areas)
will need to be approved by this team. May sound bureaucratic but this
is sometimes needed to keep the editors focused.

2. Editors- Until now the editorial process is one-man show. My goal is
to have a few more who will work with content providers to determine
whats deemed fit for inclusion in the Atlas. Once content is complete
the editorial board (not just one editor) will need to approve the new
addition. Another layer of checks but it does help maintain editorial
integrity.

3. The content providers - Content providers will work with the myself
and individual editors to identify ways to incorporate the new content,
be it photographs, artwork, text or tables. For instance if Siga decides
to remain only a content provider and not an editor, she will liaise
with one of the editors to see to it that the material she is providing
is presented according to how she sees fit. The editors job is to make
sure the writeup and presentation meets the standards set by the
editorial board.

let know what you think.
