Asalaamu alaikum Alasana,
Alhamdulillah and thank you for your beautiful questions on ghusl.
Ghusl, also referred to as a "greater ablution," is a complete shower
wherein the entire body is washed. It is required to be performed if one is
in a state of janaba (i.e.., after sexual discharge), after a woman finishes
her menstruation (heid) or post-childbirth bleeding (nifas), and upon
entering Islam.
To your point. Indeed, the containers used during the time of the Prophet
(SAW) are different from our modern showers, but that shouldn't be a
problem. The container is just a means for holding the water for
purification. All that is required is for the container to be clean, whether
it is hanging above as a shower or a tap just above the bath tub or
whatever.
How do you perform ghusl under a shower?
Here we go:
1. Make the niyya (intention) in your heart that you want to perform ghusl.
2. Say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah)
3. Then stand under the shower and wash your hands three times
4. Wash the private parts as clean as possible.
5. Perform 'wudhu' (ablution) as you normally would (except for washing the
feet). InshaAllah we will get to ablution later.
6. Then pour water over your head making sure that it reaches the roots of
the hair ( there are some exceptions for women with hairdo at this point-
and inshaallah that will also be addressed later on).
7. Then pour water on the rest of your body whilst rubbing it starting from
the right side.
8. Move from where you were and wash your feet.
9. Make sure you don't do anything that would normally break wudhu'u and you
are ready for salaah.
I think the above steps through ghusl can be accomplished under our modern
day showers or bath tubs. Allah knows best.
Do not hesitate to raise any points as you deem necessary as we progress
through the lessons. I would have loved to get a commentary from my Shaickh
himself but for the fact that he has tonnes of questions lined up. But I
hope this suffices. May Allah reward you for your appreciation and keeness
in learning about this great Deen. Indeed, we are all searching for more
knowledge. 'Rabbi zidnaa ilm' (O my Lord, increase us in knowledge).
Allahumma salli wasallim ala Nabiyyina Muhammad. Wasalaam.
Modou Mbye
