UDP HOLDS POLITICAL RALLY

By Mamadou Dem

The United Democratic Party on Saturday 15th May held a political rally at Ebony in Serrekunda.

Fatoumata Jawara of Tallinding said that for almost two years now the United Democratic Party has not been able to conduct its meetings and now their campaign manager is in custody. She said it is the will of God’ for Femi Peters to find himself in Mile 2. She therefore urged supporters to have faith in that nothing will happen to them if it is not decreed by God. He called on the people to register and vote.

For his part, Mr. Momodou Sanneh expressed concern over the national media (GRTS) for its coverage of the people of Brufut who went to State House and pledged to go and till the president’s farm come the rainy season.

Mr. Sanneh said he would like to urge all to come and join them in order to move the country forward. He questioned the money being dished out by president Jammeh. He said any government that comes to power will do more than what the present APRC government is doing. He raised the issue of Chief Ebrima Manneh and Kanyiba Kanyi to be released from custody.

Concluding, Mr. Sanneh said "I am saying to my fellow opposition parties that I have more people than you and you want me to join you; practically impossible."
He said he is rather calling on them to join the UDP.

Mr. Samba Baldeh of National Reconciliation Party {N R P) said his party and UDP are like twins. Mr. Baldeh said he is advising the party supporters particularly the youths not to be fooled by money but to look for their future and urged them to come out with their votes which is their weapon in the 2011 election to remove the APRC government.
Mr. Kemeseng Jammeh said that the APRC government has brought about some development but that the resources utilised does not belong to them but the public. He also talked about the detention of Chief Manneh and Kanyiba and called for their release.

The UDP leader lawyer Ousainou Darboe started by saying that as said by Fatoumata Jawara people should have faith because nothing could happen to anyone if it is not god’s will. He said inhuman treatment is bad and that the African Commission for Human and People’s Right which, he said, is currently meeting in the country should visit the courts to see what is currently happening with regards to inhuman treatment. He said coup’detat in any country leads to destruction and that what the country wants is change through the ballot box by voting out APRC in the 2011 election. This, he said, can only be achieved if Gambian people register and participate in electoral process. He said people who do not get the national documents have no cause to complain; that it is only those citizens who discharge their civic responsibilities by voting for the right candidates who have the right to complain.

Mr. Darboe said he is appealing for people to register and participate in the voting process. He said "every politician must meet you and talk to you about the way forward for our country and the destiny of the Gambia is decided by the ordinary people.

He said people should forget about their individual interests and concentrate on what will benefit the country tomorrow.

The UDP leader commended the NRP for their solidarity with his party and in their quest for a united front.
"I am therefore appealing to all political leaders by telling them that it is now time because the 2011 election is just around the corner and it is now time for us to come out for ourselves and come together and we shall stand and win the APRC government", concluded Mr. Darboe.
