A. Information about the Day:
1. DOA participating countries and cities:
This year, demonstrations, lobbying and press conferences will be held in 14 countries and 22 cities/towns:
1) Benin: Cotonou
2) Burkina Faso: Ouagadougou
3) Ghana: Accra
4) Liberia: Monrovia
5) Mali: Bamako
6) Nigeria: Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos
7) Senegal: Dakar
8) Sierra Leone: Freetown
9) Togo: Lomé, Aneho
10) Zimbabwe: Harare
11) Canada: Toronto
12) USA: New York, Washington DC, Seattle, Annapolis (Maryland)
13) UK: London, Glasgow
14) Sweden: Stockholm, Uppsala
2. Campaign Objective:
The objective for this campaign is: ‘By 2012 the international community will raise more human rights concerns with the Gambian government.’ For the purpose of the DOA, this objective has been broken into four points:
a) The DOA will help to raise Gambian human rights concerns with influential international and regional actors (with lobbying and media work);
b) The DOA will provide Gambians in the Diaspora an opportunity to form a strong, international network of activists that can respond to human rights violations in the Gambia;
c) The Commonwealth will prioritise Gambia’s deplorable human rights record;
d) African regional systems will prioritise Gambia’s deplorable human rights record;
3. Slogan:
The slogan for this year DOA is: “Stop Climate of Fear”
4. Messages
The key messages are:
1. Stop enforced disappearances and bring perpetrators to justice
2. Stop extrajudicial executions and bring perpetrators to justice
3. Stop torture and bring perpetrators to justice
5. Cases:
1. Chief Ebrima Manneh, Kanyiba Kanyi, Daba Marenah, Ebou Lowe, Alieu Ceesay, Alpha Bah and Manlafi Corr, victims of enforced disappearance
2. Musa Saidykhan, victim of torture and unlawful detention
3. Deyda Hydara, victim of extrajudicial execution
6. Targets:
The States and institutions we are targeting for this year are:
1. Nigeria
2. Commonwealth
7: Recommendations:
Amnesty International and partners calls on the above targets to urge the Gambian government to:
n Immediately and unconditionally order the release Ebrima Manneh, Kanyiba Kanyi, Daba Marenah, Ebou Lowe, Alieu Ceesay, Alpha Bah and Manlafi Corr, who are unlawfully detained by your government, and whose whereabouts remain unknown;
n Implement the ECOWAS Court judgement on the Ebrima Manneh and Musa Saidykhan cases;
n Stop human rights violations and comply with the Constitution of The Gambia and the country’s international obligations under the African Charter regarding the right to liberty, freedom from torture, right to a fair trial, freedom of expression and association;
n End incommunicado detention and enforced disappearances, and ensure that security personnel who engage in these practices are brought to justice in fair trials;
n Allow all prisoners visits from their families, lawyers and doctors;
n Establish an independent and international commission of inquiry to investigate the whereabouts and fate of victims of enforced disappearance
n Investigate all allegations of acts of torture in detention and ensure that those responsible for these human rights violations are brought to justice in fair trials;
n Investigate cases of extrajudicial executions by the security forces and ensure that those found responsible are brought to justice in fair trials
8. Web Component:
8.1. Visibility on the landing page of amnesty.org: the West Africa team will have the public statement available, and pictures of last year’s demonstrations on the landing page.
8.2. Web feature/dedicated page: the team will have a dedicated page that will have a summary of the campaign, the campaign digest, a background paper, with links to videos, pictures, reports etc.

C What we expect from you:
a) To send as much information and as many photos of the event as possible as soon as possible. This will be immediately uploaded to the web page for the campaign. Including:
1. A summary on the outcome of your event (not more than 3-4 paragraphs) this will go on the web as a blog message
2. Pictures of the event (send your 5 best picture first, you can send others later). These can be uploaded at dropbox.com by following the instructions attached ‘Instructions Photo Upload Gambia Day of Action’
3. Quotes from any public officials or embassy or high commission staff
4. A list of media interest or interviews granted or media organisations that covered your event so that we can monitor the coverage
5. Publications of the event in your local media
c) Media strategy:
Amnesty International will focus mostly on international media organisations. You will be expected to generate media interest in your country and get media organisation to cover your event. Priority should be given to online media (because we send the link around easily). We will also do the following:
