JDAM,

You, Galleh, Kukeh, Evian, and Cherno/Jados are the vrai democrats. I guess you could see me a mile away coming toward you guys. I tried to have Galleh accompany me but he wouldn't budge. There's something to be said for standing one's ground. I must admit if the CNDD were inflexible they we may never accompany her on her journey. What is the setup of AU's peer review outfit? What authorities do they have and could they leverage anything to convince rogue Presidents they ought to reconsider their ways? Or is it basically scout's honour?

Haruna. I am ashamed to see them wait for the EU to grace the CNDD before they massaged their self-righteous indignations as Galleh puts it.

This is wonderful and goes a long way in extending an olive branch to the opposition parties of La Guinea and the AU (therefore ECOWAS). France is to be commended for assisting in funding of the registration programme that was in process prior to the military intervention. I think however that the makeup of the electoral commission (CENI) must be reviewed by the CNDD. The CENI was composed largely by Lansana's government and although it carries a tag of "Independence", it is highly ethnic in composition and aimed at maintaining the PUP in power. At the very least, it must reflect the ethnic composition of La Guinea. This will be an area where the CNDD itself being diverse, could play an important role along with elders of the various ethnic communities of La Guinea. We must remember that there is no "Competency" threshhold in becoming a member of electoral commissions. ANy citizen of voting age, sound mind and body should be qualified. If the desire is Fairness, then all STAKEHOLDERS of La GUinea should be represented, if not equally, at least proportionately. The CNDD should also move deliberately to review and renegotiate the mining contracts while suspending all extractive operations in the country. The negotiations and issue of prospecting and mining licenses in La Guinea must not reside in the Presidency of a new La Guinea. This is where Mali and Senegal could prove valuable to La Guinea in an advisory role. I am pleased the BBC and other news agencies are now characterizing the events as a military INTERVENTION rather than a coup d'etat. Haruna. Courtesy BBC news.

Guinea junta pledges 2009 polls

Capt Camara had said he would stay in power for two years

Guinea's military ruler has promised to hold elections in 2009 - a year earlier than previously announced, a senior French official has said.

"Captain [Moussa Dadis] Camara was very clear... in accepting the period of 12 months," said Alain Joyandet, after meeting the military ruler in Conakry.

Capt Camara also pledged not to stand in those polls, according to the French secretary of state for co-operation.

He seized power last month, hours after the death of President Lansana Conte.

Mr Joyandet is the most senior western official to meet the coup leaders, reports the AFP news agency.

"We are satisfied that in 2009 Guinea will have a new parliament and a new elected president," he said.

Aid continues

Some Western countries had called for elections within six months but Mr Joyandet said this was not realistic, as voter lists were not ready, according to Reuters news agency.

The envoy also said that France would continue with financial aid to the electoral commission, notably in the area of voter registration, which has stalled because of a lack of money.

Capt Camara previously said he would organise elections by the end of 2010 - when President Conte's term of office would have expired.

The African Union has suspended Guinea because of the military intervention, which has been strongly condemned by Western donors.

But many people in Guinea back the move, which follows many years of economic stagnation and political repression under Mr Conte.

But the African Union decided not to apply sanctions and said it would work closely with the coup plotters, to try to bring Guinea back to constitutionality.

Guinea's junta has said it was suspending mining operations in the country pending a "renegotiation" of agreements with mining companies.

More than a third of the world's bauxite reserves are in Guinea, making it the second-largest producer internationally. It also has large reserves of gold, diamonds, iron and nickel.¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://listserv.icors.org/archives/gambia-l.html
