British Military Delegation Visits The Gambia

A high level military delegation from the United Kingdom led by Brigadier
David Richards, Chief of Joint Force Operations recently concluded a visit
to The Gambia. According to a press release from the British High
Commission, Brigadier Richards, who had lead responsibility for the UK's
short notice military operations, is travelling to Sierra for six weeks
after a brief visit to Conakry and Dakar.

The release states that the delegation had a meeting with President Jammeh
during which they discussed the regional peace keeping efforts in Sierra
Leone, regional developments and bilateral military cooperation. 'The
President expressed The Gambia's continuing support for the UK's peace
keeping efforts in Sierra Leone and underlined the importance of close
cooperation on the ground and in the United Nations,' the release states.

It went on to state that both President Jammeh and Brigadier Richards
expressed mutual concern at recent events in Guinea Conakry and that they
also reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation between The Gambia
and the UK, 'recalling with satisfaction the resumption of officer training
for Gambian cadets at Sandhurst Military Academy in September 2000 after a
seven year gap'. At the end of their discussion, according to the release,
President Jammeh honored Brigadier Richards for his contribution to regional
peace keeping by presenting him with a millennium medal and sash.

The release states that both the Vice President and the Secretary of State
for Foreign Affairs echoed President Jammeh's message of support for the
peacekeeping efforts of the United kingdom in Sierra Leone and restated
their commitment to the development of Africa as a whole. The release
further went on to refer to a lunch at Ngala Lodge hosted by the British
High Commissioner during which Brigadier Richards and his delegation had
productive discussions with the US Ambassador George Haley, the Service
chiefs and senior military and civil servants.

The Chief of Staff Colonel Baboucarr Jatta presented Brigadier Richards with
a Gambia Armed Forces shield. The other members of Brigadier Richards'
delegation included Commander Simon Brand, Royal Navy, Colonel Graham
Duthoit, the Rabat- based Defence Attache responsible for The Gambia ,
Colonel Mike Argue and Major Paul Howe from the Permanent Joint
Headquarters.
