The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Turkey
tortured or otherwise mistreated sixteen lawyers
who were alleged to be working for Kurdish clients
and failed to investigate their claims of abuse.

The men were arrested a decade ago after a confession
from a Kurdistan Workers Party member who said the
lawyers had aided the separatist group.

The government accused the lawyers of being members
of the group, which Turkey and the U.S. deem
terrorists.  The lawyers said they were targeted
for representing clients before the State Security
Court and working as human rights advocates.
