Research Unit for Multilingual Language Technology
Background
The newly founded Research Unit for Multilingual Language
Technology (MLT) was preceded by some 13 years of related
research at the Department of General Linguistics. In 1981-1984
there was a project studying the automatic recognition of
Finnish sponsored by the Academy of Finland. The Research Unit
for Computational Linguistics (RUCL) was sponsored by the
Academy of Finland and the University of Helsinki for two five
year terms in 1985-1994 after an evaluation conducted by
international assessors. A few other projects were attached to
RUCL:
An Esprit II project No. 2083 "Structured Information Management:
Processing and Retrieval" (SIMPR). This project was directed by
Fred Karlsson, and it lasted 3 1/2 years, from January 1989 to
June 1992.
A machine translation project sponsored by IBM, and which lasted
from 1987 to 1992. The morphological and surface-syntactic
tagging of the Bank of English corpus of some 200 million words
[*] of English texts, 1993 - 1995. The Bank of English project is
conducted by University of Birmingham and the COBUILD project, and
HarperCollins Publishers, Glasgow. The tagging is done in Helsinki,
and this is probably the largest tagging project to date (others
are normally dealing with 1 million words of text or so).
