BANJUL, THE GAMBIA- Former Gambian army Major Omar Fye, has been appointed State House Press Secretary, with immediate effect, this paper has been reliably informed. Mr.Fye's appointment took effect Monday, January 15TH, 2006. He replaces Marcel Thomasi, who was relieved from his post recently. Thomasi, was removed for undisclosed reasons by the State.

Prior to his appointment, Major Fye, was residing in Atlanta, Georgia. He visited Gambia, some months ago, where he had fruitful meetings with The Gambian leader, who encouraged him to return home and team up with his government to steer the affairs of the state. Fye, a well trained infantry soldier and former commander of The Gambian ECOMOG, contingent in Liberia, was said to have accepted the President's invitation to work with his administration. While, in The Gambia, Fye, applauded what he calls, numerous development projects initiated by The Gambian leader.

Upon his return to the US, he finally packed his belongings in December of 2006, to return home, with the intention of working with Jammeh's government. This paper earlier learnt that Fye, was being groomed for Ministerial post at the Department of State For Interior. But Monday's developments, suggested that The Gambian, leader decided to hire him as Press Director for now.

Meanwhile, Fye had a meeting with Gambia's first female Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy, who welcomed him on board. The VP was quoted as telling Omar Fye that "The government come and go, people come and go, but The Gambia remains." This statement of VP Saidy, said our sources, touched Major Fye, who reassured her his unflinching commitment and dedication to work with the government of the day.

Major Fye's recent move to work with the Jammeh government, is not well received in some circles within and out side the country. Some argued that Fye, is working with the wrong people, considering his past positive track record in the army and the civil populace. They further argued that he might well be betrayed by Jammeh, who they say can hardly maintain his workers. That Fye, might follow the foot steps of Malafi Jarju and Amadou Scattered Janneh, who were "used and abused by Jammeh."

Relationship between the private press and past State House, Press Directors, had never been cordial. They often denied the independent press coverage at the State House, for reasons best known to them. It is not yet clear, what package Fye, had for the country's media, but observers are closely monitoring developments.
